Chapter 14

The iron monster was coming closer, his eyes gleaming like shards of obsidian. Fear gripped Alex’s heart as if he were facing a high-tech cyborg. A high-tech bovine cyborg.

The shorty stumbled behind Alex. Nervously, Alex looked back at him. The small man quickly averted his frightened gaze. Heather, standing behind him, clutched her sword, her eyes widened and her full lips trembling. Even the huge barbarian quivered like a leaf.

Rebecca said in a ringing voice, “Captain, he could be our ally! He attacked the ogres!”

Alex had the same thought. So, what should he do? Say hello? Turning to the monster and taking a step forward, he said in a hoarse voice, “Hello...”

‘M-O-O-O-O-O!”

The bull charged forward. His hooves shook the ground, his horns glowing with black light. Alex thrust his axe forward, aiming for the iron muzzle. His action was decisive and courageous, though he had mentally bid farewell to life.

“Tiger! Stop!” a command came.

Above the adventurers’ heads, a bloody tentacle flew forward. The tentacle smacked the bull in the muzzle, and like a locomotive thrown off its tracks, he lurched to the side. He didn’t fall or topple over but turned to the side and stood still.

A bloody angel descended from the sky, long red hair fluttering in the wind, face and figure obscured by gigantic flapping wings. Only when the winged creature stood between the adventurers and the bull did Alex see that they had been saved by Eleanor.

The bull glared fiercely at the lady, stamping his hoof on the ground.

“Tiger, don’t be angry with me,” Eleanor scolded the bull like a mischievous pup. “Attack the ogres! Not the humans!”

The bull’s dark eyes flickered, but he turned anyway, his rusty paws screeching as it charged the giants. By then, the ogres had gathered at the edge of the clearing. They seemed to be regrouping, but it was rather chaotic. The green and black giants bickered with the gray ones, and they reluctantly stood where their “corporals” pointed.

But there was no collision. Drums began to beat erratically, and two figures appeared in the corridor formed by the giants — one as massive as a mountain, and the other small and hooded.

The massive ogre was bearded and gray, and he was taller than any of the leopard-spotted, green, or purple ones. A broad-shouldered giant, he was holding not a crude wooden club but a huge stone axe on a wooden handle, which obviously represented a higher level of development.

Next to the bearded ogre was none other than the D-rank occultist, the child hunter Walter.

The bull’s roar covered the valley with a thunderous dome. The ogres hunched their shoulders, everyone except for the bearded one and Walter.

The bull Tiger froze in front of the “corridor.” Eleanor hurtled through the air toward the couple, her wings carrying her, her emerald silk gown rippling like waves.

Alex felt as if he had stumbled into an epic Hollywood movie: a castle behind him, monsters swarming around, the strongest among them about to fight to the death, sending zigzagging bolts of fire and lightning in all directions.
